Chisumi Ishikawa was inspired by music at the age of six when she started playing the\u00a0 piano. In her teens, discouraged by the difficulty of some piano pieces, she changed to playing bass guitar in a rock band instead, later becoming attracted to the violin at the age of twenty three.\u00a0 After studying for a degree in\u00a0 Japanese literature at Waseda University, and working\u00a0 in\u00a0 IT\u00a0 \u00a0as a computer game designer, Chisumi took three years of private violin lessons and\u00a0 became a student at Osaka College of Music, where she studied violin with Sachi Togi. \u00a0She attended a winter\u00a0 course at Griffith University in Queensland Australia, studying there with Michele Walsh.<\/p>\n
After graduation, while she continued studying with Nobuhiko Asaeda at Violin Master course, and viola with Tomoko Taguchi, she played in Kobe Philharmonic Orchestra as a 2nd violin first desk player for twelve years, formed a string quartet with orchestra colleagues and also took on some teaching.<\/p>\n
It was in 2013 that she came across Kato Havas,\u2019 \u201cA New Approach to Violin Playing,\u201d which immediately helped her so much with the aches and pains she was suffering from that\u00a0 she flew to England to attend Kato Havas’ workshops and lessons and intensive Twelve\u00a0 Lesson\u00a0 courses\u00a0 with Gloria Bakhshayesh\u00a0 in 2014, and 2015.\u00a0 Finding the experience life changing she began to pass on the New Approach to her pupils and to give workshops in Japan, including a workshop for JASTA ( Japanese String Teachers’ Association), and for Kobe College School of Music, as a Representative of KHANA(Kat\u00f3 Havas Association of New Approach) Japan.<\/p>\n
At the same time she began\u00a0 her translations into Japanese of\u00a0 “A New Approach to Violin Playing” by Kat\u00f3 Havas (published by Yamaha Music Media) and tutor books “Dancing Bows” and “Ringing Strings” by Gloria Bakhshayesh. In “Dancing Bows”\u00a0 it was necessary\u00a0 to substitute the English folk tunes with Japanese ones and for this Chisumi enlisted the aid of\u00a0 composer Ton Vandervalk, husband of Gerianne Wigboldus ( KHANA Representative in the Netherlands),\u00a0 who made\u00a0 delightful arrangements of the tunes she selected. To date, more than four\u00a0hundred\u00a0 copies of the book\u00a0 have been sold to Japanese violin teachers and pupils.<\/p>\n
In 2016,\u00a0 when Gerianne\u00a0 and Ton\u00a0 were travelling in Japan, Chisumi invited them to a concert of her pupils, where they played together a composition of Ton Vandervalk\u00a0 \u00a0and gave a New Approach\u00a0 workshop\u00a0 together.<\/p>\n
Recently, Chisumi has put Japanese subtitles to Kato\u2019s YouTube videos, which is\u00a0 inspiring many Japanese string players.<\/p>\n
